Do you have a dress code?
Our dress code consists of no jeans, t-shirts and shorts on Wednesday evenings.
Friday evenings are much more casual with jeans being acceptable unless they are ripped or have
holes in them. On Saturday evenings we request that our patrons attire be dressy casual and
frown on jeans. Remember your date or our other patrons will want to dance with you if you look
Do I need special shoes to dance in?
While we do suggest that our patrons purchase shoes designed specifically for dancing, it is not necessary. We do however have a few recommendations on what type of shoe is best to dance in if you do not purchase specially designed dance shoes. Women should not wear a shoe that merely slips on their foot or that has a thick wedge sole. Instead the shoe should tie or have a strap to help hold it on the foot and the sole should allow you to bend your foot. Leather-soled shoes are the next best option to dance shoes. Ideally the soles of women's and men's shoes should be smooth. Rubber soles or soles with a thick tread have a tendency to stick to our hardwood dance floor thereby inhibiting your ability to dance properly. Dance sneakers or bowling sneakers are acceptable. In order to help protect our hardwood dance floor, we ask that you carry in the shoes you intend to dance in whenever it is raining or snowing outside.
Do I need a dance partner to take group lessons?
No. Our group lessons are single friendly in that we rotate partners (leaders/followers) quite frequently. Even if there is not an equal ratio of leaders to followers, you will not be without a dance partner very long in our group lessons.
Do we have to rotate partners in the group lessons if we don't want to?
No. Although, we have found that the best way to learn to lead and follow happens when you change partners throughout the classes. This not only teaches you how to adjust to any partner, but also helps compensate for the weaknesses of your regular partner thereby avoiding frivolous arguments while you are learning. However, if you insist on staying with your regular partner, we ask that you step back out of the rotation line so as not to interrupt the normal follow of the class.
How much do group lessons cost and when are they offered?
Our group lessons generally cost $10 per person and usually include a dance social immediately following the lesson. We also offer a pre-paid discount dance/lesson punch card that admits one person to six of our group lessons and/or most of our dances. The card retails for $54. Our group lessons are currently offered on Wednesday and Friday evenings from 7:30pm to 8:30pm and occasionally on Thursday evenings. Please consult our monthly calendar to see what lessons are being offered for the current month.
Do I need to pre-register for the group dance lessons?
No, you do not need to pre-register for our group dance lessons. Our Wednesday & Friday group lessons are offered on a monthly basis with a new session beginning the first Wednesday & Friday of each month. These lessons are progressive in nature. The basics are taught during the first two weeks and a new move is usually added each week. As such, it is recommended that new students only join at the beginning of a month or at the latest by the second Wednesday or Friday of the month. We currently offer beginner, intermediate and advanced levels on Wednesdays and beginner level only on Fridays. Friday group lessons for the month of February will be offered on a drop in basis with a new beginner only dance lesson being taught each week. In order to allow the instructors to begin their classes in a timely fashion, we request that you arrive at least 10-15 minutes prior to the beginning of the class in order to allow sufficient time to change your shoes and pay your admission fee.
Do you offer student discounts?
Yes, we currently offer a $2.00 discount to full-time college students at most of our dances. Please note that you must show a current college ID in order to receive this discount. No exceptions are permitted. No discounts are available at our Tony Boffa or Bob Charest Saturday night dances.
I am interested in taking Private dance lessons. When are they offered and how much do they cost?
Private lessons are offered by appointment only. While a partner is generally preferred for private lessons, we do have instructors who are willing to act as dance partners for our single patrons. Private lessons are $65.00 for 55 minutes. In addition, we offer package plans at discounted prices. 4 lessons for $250.00 or $600.00 for 10 lessons. Our Wedding pkg is $100.00 for three 1/2hr lessons. Since our private lessons are tailored to your individual needs, please call us directly for more information.
Do I need to reserve tickets for the Saturday night dances?
As a general rule, you may purchase your ticket(s) at the door the evening of the dance you would like to attend. We currently only pre-sell tickets for our New Years Eve gala and evenings when the more popular bands such as The Tony Boffa Band or The Bob Charest Band are performing at Maplewood. On these nights seating is offered on a reserved basis only in order to maximize our seating capacity. Please note that you will be seated in the best available seat depending on the number of people in your party that you are purchasing tickets for. If you have a favorite seat or table or are planning on joining someone who may have already purchased a ticket, please be sure to mention that when you order your tickets.
How do I pre-purchase tickets for your New Years Eve Gala, The Tony Boffa Band or The Bob Charest Band performances?
Tickets are sold during our normal business hours which currently are Wednesday & Friday from 7:00pm to 11:00pm and Saturday from 7:00pm to Midnight. Tickets are also available by mail or phone Monday-Saturday between the hours of 11:00am and 10:00pm. We accept Cash, MasterCard and Visa. Are you a Bottle Club?
No, Maplewood is not a Bottle Club. We have a Beer & Wine License and offer a wide selection of the most popular beers, wines, wine coolers and pre-mixed alcoholic drinks in addition to soda, juice and water. In accordance with Maine State Law, alcoholic beverages may not be brought into or removed from the premises. Since it is difficult if not impossible to monitor whether something contains alcohol or not, we do not allow our patrons to carry in any liquids alcoholic or non-alcoholic. We appreciate your understanding and thank you for your cooperation in this matter. Maplewood reserves the right to refuse admission and/or alcohol service to anyone who appears to be intoxicated or does not have proper identification that they are of legal age to consume alcohol. The bar closes one-half hour before the dance ends.
Do you sell Gift Certificates?
Yes, we currently offer gift certificates in just about any denomination. As such, they make excellent gifts for anniversaries, birthdays, holidays or for that someone special on your shopping list who appears to have everything. What better way to introduce someone new to the many benefits of dancing. We also sell quite a few of our discount group dance/lesson cards and private dance lesson cards as gifts. Gift certificates may be purchased during our normal business hours or by phone.
IMPORTANT NOTES: CERTIFICATE MUST BE PRESENTED AT THE TIME OF REDEMPTION. RECEIPTS AND OTHER PROOF OF PURCHASE ARE NOT VALID FOR REDEMPTION. Certificates are not redeemable for cash and are not refundable.
What is the Age Range Who Frequent You Facility?
With all the recent media focus on dancing, the age range of our clientele has increased to include those in their 20's right on up through their 70's and even sometimes 80's. Dancing is not only a great way to meet people, but it offers many important health benefits as well. Did you know that dancing can burn up to 400 calories per hour? In comparison walking 2.5 to 4.5 miles per hour only burns about 210 to 315 calories per hour.
